Mentally Maimed, Differently Treated. Attitudes Towards Mentally Disabled Civil War Veterans in Finland 1918–39

This article analyses the ideological, political and medical positioning of mentally ill veterans Finnish Civil War 1918 in inter-war Finland. Using pension applications, writings veteran activists, parliamentary debates, psychiatric examinations military documents this shows that war-related mental disability was a locally nationally politicised, sympathised justified phenomenon Finland, as long maimed had fought honourably on White side internal conflict. narrative also fuelled ideological interpretations war neurosis among doctors even psychiatrists, many whom participated side. Studying illness multiveteran cohort provides an important vantage point for understanding values hardiness stamina masculine ideals, allows us to trace flexible intersection these demands with identity, hegemonic objectives, knowledge class considerations after civil war. It broadens our influence forces have formation diagnostic practice where health disabilities are concerned.
